Plumber, Drainer and Gasfitter Licences Explained
Queensland plumbing runs on two licence layers. The person on the tools holds an occupational licence, which shows the skills for the work. The business taking the job holds a contractor licence, which shows it can carry jobs financially and is set up to run them properly.
The QBCC issues both. Three classes cover most of what we do:
Plumber
a plumber's licence covers plumbing work, apart from anything needing its own endorsement.
Drainer
a drainer's licence looks after drainage below ground, again apart from work with a separate endorsement.
Gasfitter
gas work belongs to a licensed gasfitter alone, and that covers putting in, changing, fixing, servicing, testing and signing off on a gas system and its pipework.
Regulated work falls into permit work, notifiable work and minor work, and a licensed plumber or drainer must do all three. The QBCC says that rule protects the home, the owner's health and the owner's rights.

Paperwork and Inspections After a Job
Two bodies share the checking. The QBCC licenses plumbers, registers notifiable work and investigates unlicensed work, while Brisbane City Council handles the permit side, checking applications and inspecting new work.
After a job, the paperwork you keep includes:
A Form 4 copy
after notifiable work, which goes to you as the owner, and which the QBCC can supply if none arrives.
A gas system compliance certificate
straight after gas work on a new install or alteration, with a copy to the gas network operator inside 5 days where a network feeds the system.
You can also search the QBCC's online registers to confirm a licence, and searching your address tells you whether a Form 4 went in for the property. An owner can request a council inspection of notifiable work at any point, and a council inspector may call within 1 year of the notice.

The Suburbs We Work Across
Our regular run covers Grange and the suburbs on its borders: Stafford, Gordon Park, Lutwyche, Windsor, Wilston, Newmarket and Alderley. At the last census, the suburb counted 4,615 residents across 1.75 square kilometres, mostly in separate houses.
Alderley and Newmarket each have their own page, and the full catchment sits on our areas page. Whatever the address, the licence and the process stay the same.
Licence and Paperwork Questions
Call (07) 3523 7172Does a gas job need its own licence?
Yes, a licensed gasfitter holds the gas work licence, and you can ask to see it before the job starts. Our gas fitting page lists the work that counts.
Who checks plumbing work in a Grange home?
Brisbane City Council issues permits and inspects new work, and you can ask for a council check of notifiable work whenever you like. The QBCC handles licensing and the notifiable work register, while Urban Utilities looks after the public mains and sewer.
What happens if plumbing work turns out faulty?
Tell us first, and we come back to sort it out. If work seems unlicensed, defective or non-compliant, or a Form 4 never arrived for notifiable work, you can lodge a complaint with the QBCC online.
Do you work on units and rentals as well as houses?
Yes, we work for owner-occupiers, landlords, tenants and unit owners, though a tenant books us while the owner approves the work, and a unit job can need body corporate sign-off. Urban Utilities stops at the meter, so the pipes on the property side belong to the owner.
